As the band’s bass player my normal concerns are to remember
the words, remember the changes and not to trip over my cables. This gig was
not a normal one though. A normal gig is a few hundred people at the most
and the possible distractions of wedding speeches or a guest beer. The usual
situation is to arrive at the venue, set up, wait for hours then play and go
home. Today most of us had time to go for a curry in down-town Minehead. I
say most of us as Richard and Colin were busy working with Marillion.
A phone call from Colin rallied us backstage and we
assembled in the wings while Marillion’s gear was moved and ours put in
place. The moment was suddenly upon us and we walked out to cheers from the
crowd.
We ripped into ‘Can’t turn you loose’ and, happy with our
progress, kept on into ‘Mr Pitiful’, ‘Midnight Hour’ and a version of
‘Signed Sealed Delivered’ that Stevie Wonder would have been proud of.
The crowd were enjoying it, but they really went wild at the
start of ‘Take me to the river’ when they spotted Steve Rothery walking on
stage, playing along. Riffs were swapped between Steve and Colin, much to
the delight of the thousands of fans.
The pace stepped up even further when H bounded on to join
us and sing ‘Gimmie some lovin’’. With both of Marillion’s Steves on board
we built up more momentum with the audience and didn’t look back.
If there was a sign that we were doing something right it
was that the crowd were singing along loudly and that many of them formed an
enormous conga line. That, I felt, would be the benchmark of all future
gigs.
As suddenly as it had begun we found ourselves playing the
last number. Everyone looked happy, me especially as I hadn’t forgotten any
words and had avoided tripping over all my cables. After an encore we left
Marillion’s wonderful fans and bounded down the stairs to the dressing room.
A feast of beer, water and jelly babies awaited us. And for once, instead of
packing up and a long drive home, we walked back to the chalets and drank a
toast or twelve to Soul Beaver’s greatest gig in years.

Comments from the crowd…
And that was it: except it
wasn't! The extraordinary Soul Beaver, the
soul & funk covers band who count Racket Records' own Colin Price (on
guitar) and Richard Lee (drum tech, on drums, unsurprisingly!) among
their members, delivered a hugely enjoyable set of classic songs, ably
assisted at times by h and Steve R who were clearly having a ball. Both
Marillos joined in with a fine version of "Take Me To The River", and h
belted out a superb, turbo-charged "Gimme Some Lovin" before bidding us
goodbye until tomorrow. 'The Beaver' had us dancing and singing along
(aching feet or not!) for another half-hour or more, before centre stage
was closed.

Soul Beaver - Fantastic!
It was cool seeing a lot of Marillion fans jumping around with so much
energy after a gig! A good Friday night party atmosphere. Well done!

Soul Beaver were a
revelation, too: maximum respect for the perfect way to close out the
evening!

Hi Rich, Colin and other
guys and girl of the band!
Thanks for a really fantastic after show on Friday! You guys really rock,
got the funk and swing!!! Was really a long time since I've danced like
that! When you told us you're playing at weddings I have been thinking about
getting divorced and then get married again so you could come and play at
our wedding but no...
I think its best you'd all be at the next weekend, and for me it would be
perfectly fine if you played all nights!!
Thanks again and till next time!

I was too knackered to
dance away to the excellent SB, but I listened and smiled at so many
Marillion fans jumping around to music so different from the main focus of
the weekend!
Well done to all of Soul Beaver! You got the after show partying off to a
great start!
